Golf Themed Jello Dessert - Mulch & Paint (2024)

In honor of this weekend’s 2019 PGA Championship I thought I’d share with you my golf-themed jello dessert.

I have mentioned before about my family’s love of watching The Masters every year. This year’s Masters was unforgettable and so exciting to watch. As usual, I made pimento cheese sandwiches. (you can see my recipe HERE) We also had plain Lay’s potato chips, chicken, pasta salad and a peach cobbler. I wanted to make a congealed salad because what says Sunday in the South like a congealed salad? I decided to get a little more creative and make individual golf-themed lime jello salads with pretzel crusts. Total YUM. Here’s how I made them:

I began by crushing up pretzels by pounding the living daylight out of them through a zip-lock freezer bag. I then mixed them with sugar and melted butter and placed them in clear plastic cups.

For the second layer, a mixture of softened cream cheese, sugar and Cool Whip taste great beside the salty pretzel crust. I colored it with a lot of green food coloring (I mean a LOT) to give it the grassy color. You can pipe the cream cheese layer on top of the pretzels or get really fancy like me. Forgive me for forgetting to make a photo of this but I cut a piece of thin cardboard (think an old cereal box) the width of the top of the plastic cup and spun it across the top to smooth it out.

Place the cups in the refrigerator to ensure that the layer is able to set and won’t seep into the lower layer. Thirty minutes to an hour would be good.

I made lime jello with crushed pineapples added and sat it in the fridge to begin firming up. Once it began to to gel, I spooned a layer of the lime jello on top of the cream cheese mixture . The cups will then need to go back into the fridge until the jello has fully set. Allow several hours for this.

A final layer of the cream cheese mixture is placed on the top.

I was making these desserts on the Saturday before the final of The Masters on Sunday. For some reason, I had faith in myself that I could come up with some sort of decoration using only what I had in my kitchen cabinets. (If you saw my kitchen cabinets, you’d totally understand.) Well, I did think about the flags earlier and bought some tropical-flavored Fruit Rollups in hopes of using those to make the flags. My kids are older so I don’t usually have Fruit Rollups in my pantry.

Here’s what I came up with…I began making the flags by cutting a rectangle with the rollups trying to get as much of the yellow as possible. The rollups are already sticky but I put a drop of water on my finger and ran it down the edge of the rollup to help each end stick to itself.

I found some mini marshmellows and rolled them into small balls to use as the golf balls.

For the hole, I melted a few semi-sweet chocolate chips in the microwave, placed the melted chocolate in the corner of a zip lock bag, snipped the end and piped a small round circle on the top layer of the dessert. I had to round out the circle with a toothpick on some of the holes to get them to the needed shape. I few green sprinkles on top just added a little more color.

Layer 1: 2 Cups Pretzels, crushed & mixed with 3/4 C melted Butter & 3 T Sugar. Place Layer 1 equally between 12 clear plastic cups.

Layer 2: 1 8oz pkg Cream Cheese (softened) & 3/4 C Sugar creamed together with hand mixer. Fold in 1 8oz container of Cool Whip. Add green food coloring to desired color. Layer cream cheese mixture on top of pretzel layer. Place cups in fridge for about 30 minutes.

Layer 3: 1 6oz box of lime flavored Jello dissolved in 2 C boiling water. Add 1 20oz can crushed pineapple (undrained). Place jello/pineapple mixture in fridge to cool and set sightly. Spoon jello on cream cheese mixture. Place in fridge until jello is completely set.

Layer 4: Top each cup with remaining cream cheese mix and decorate!

This dessert is very simple but it does take a little time for each step. For me, I enjoyed eating these because they were already portioned out and it kept me from overeating! I totally needed this because they were really delicious!
